Executive Summary
This volume of CISS Strat Review (CSR) presents an assessment of two policy documents of the U.S. released in October 2022: the National Security Strategy (NSS) and the National Defense Strategy (NDS), including the Missile Defense Review (MDR) and the Nuclear Posture Review (NPR).
The CSR includes the implications of these strategies and policy stances for the region and issues relevant to Pakistan. It comprehends the U.S. perspective of threat matrix, including rival states and actors, core issues of national interest, and relevant strategic approaches to deal with challenges and secure strategic interests. The key purpose is to develop useful recommendations for the stakeholders in Pakistan to adopt suitable strategic and policy approaches to secure national strategic interests in the region.
The first part constitutes an overview of the U.S. NSS 2022 and its comparison with the NSS of 2015 and 2017. This section is followed by a summary of the NDS 2022 and its comparison with the NDS of 2012. The next section covers the summary of MDS 2022 and its comparison with the MDR of 2010 and 2019. It leads to the summary of the NPR 2022 and its comparison with the NPR of 2018 and 2010. The last portion of the assessment contains recommendations for Pakistan.
