Center for International Strategic Studies (CISS) Islamabad organized a round-table with Mr. Rupert Stone, a Berlin based independent journalist working on South Asia and the Middle East, on April 30, 2019 at CISS conference room. Mr. Rupert Stone delivered a lecture on ‘Afghan Peace Talks: Assessment of Perils and Prospects: An Assessment’. The lecture was followed by an interactive session. Before the commencement of the lecture, Amb. Ali Sarwar Naqvi, Executive Director CISS, welcomed the honourable guest and highlighted center’s research activities.
Mr. Stone focused on the regional context of Afghan Peace Talks and the role of Russia. He also spoke about the efforts of US diplomat and Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation, Zalmay Khalilzad. He emphasized on two areas that are important in post-conflict Afghanistan; road infrastructure projects and women participation. He also talked about the prospects of extending CPEC to Afghanistan. In conclusion of his discussion, Mr. Stone said that, the success of Afghan Peace Talks will be a major turning point for the prosperity of region.
ED CISS concluded the Round Table by noting that Mr. Stone’s views were noteworthy and would help researchers in their research works. Amb. Ali Sarwar expressed gratitude to Mr. Stone and appreciated his effort in presenting an unbiased angle of the topic.
