1st CISS Outreach Workshop

It has been decided to run a three-day workshop for two representatives each nominated by respective departments from ten selected universities from Bahawalpur, Multan, Peshawar, Gujarat, Sargodha and Lahore to kick start the initiative. Since, the universities are in the midst of their summer vacations and faculty members have no teaching commitments they can easily find time to attend the workshop. The inaugural workshop has been planned to be held at Nathiagali for which logistic and other arrangements have been explored and details are enclosed with this concept note. The programme would include an introduction to nuclear and related technologies including the emerging technologies, deterrence theory, nuclear strategy and Pakistan’s nuclear programme and policy, peaceful uses of nuclear energy and non-proliferation, arms control and disarmament related issues. This programme is planned to be repeated for remaining universities in Southern Punjab, Sindh, Karachi and Quetta. The major benefit of this faculty training would be that the participants would be able to teach their students more effectively and reach out to larger audiences in their respective universities and at other forums. Many of these faculty members regularly travel abroad to attend international conferences and this exposure would stand them in good stead while representing Pakistan at those forums. It is hoped that this programme would remain a continuing effort that will not only enhance awareness of those with relatively lesser exposure and opportunities to learn about policy issues as well as more complex technological aspects, but also improve the mutual understanding and connectivity between scholars from all over the country.
